Starting something here

Ok, in an attempt to get something going here...
Any interest in Tan Dun? He's got an amazing gift for compositions paying homage to the traditional arts within a post-modern or perhaps avant-garde context. Has anyone listened to his Marco Polo opera or the Water Passion Opera that just got done playing in New York. Many young students in Taiwan really look up to Tan Dun, rather than the multitude of more traditional composers from China and Taiwan.

Somewhat along the lines of Tan Dun is U-theatre from Taipei.

I'm actually more into pop music. Di Ke Niu Zai, Sen Yan Zi, that sort of thing. Oh and of couse everybody loves Deng Li Jun, even if it is a bit old and syrupy.

But I think we need to get a few more people into this tribe. All three of us should invite everyone we know who listens to Chinese music. I'll start inviting a few.

Loved Tan Dun's score for Zhang Yimou's Hero/Ying Xiong. I'm surprised Zhang didn't ask Tan back to score House of Flying Daggers/Shi Mian Mai Fu.

Speaking of Deng Li Jun/Teresa Teng, next year, 2005, will be the tenth year anniversary of her passing.

I don't think I am familiar with Tan Dun. My wife's seamstress played me a singer/songwriter who is from Northern China/Mongolia area. Is this the one?

I believe Tan Dun was born in Hunan province. He was the one that did the music for Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon.

Tan Dun, I believe is now back in China. To chinese artist he's a very classical composer. To westerners he's avant garde perhaps even neo-pagan/tribal. His opera Nine Songs is an example. Recently wrote an amazing opera of/about Water rites and Christianity. He did the music for the reunification of Hong Kong and the 2000 Olympics and something for the milenium. These are just a few things that come to mind...his work is very esoteric and multi-layered.
